Something New: Dog Park

**Confession: I actually did this the same week as the concerts, but I figured 3 new things in 1 week? I can spread that out a bit!**

I took my pup, Chloe, to the dog park with the bestie and her Westie, (yes, yes that was intentional...) Ryder.

Excuse the tail shot...it's the only one I got of them together!
This was Chloe's first time to ever go to a dog park. The weather was gorgeous and the park is pretty awesome. It's 15 acres and has 3 ponds/lakes for the pups to play in, and it even has a separate small dog park inside.

I was a bit nervous at first. She tends to play pretty rough, and sometimes gets snippy if there are too many dogs around her at once.

I kept her on a leash for a bit so she would get used to her surroundings and then I let her off. She did great!

She played keep away fetch and ran around all over the place.

I can't wait to take her back!

Something New: Concerts

Like I told you last week, I'm trying to do at least one new thing every week this year.

Last week I went to two concerts, both of which were new experiences for me.

The first was Eli Young Band. I won tickets and backstage passes to their show at House of Blues from a local radio station, and took my bestie to the show. I'd never been backstage to meet a band.

They are one of my favorite country bands, so I was extremely excited for the opportunity! We got to watch part of their sound check and get a mini private performance from them...

That's us in the middle :)
...and then we got to meet and take pictures with them, and finally, we were treated to some yummy BBQ!

After all the backstage fun, we had to leave the venue for a bit while they got everything set up. We made sure to get in line early so that we would get a great spot. Their opening act, The Cadillac Black, put on a great show!

I could hardly contain myself when EYB started setting up...

Did I mention they're one of my favorites?

For those of you less familiar with the band, there is no "Eli Young". The band is actually named after the lead singer, Mike Eli and the lead guitarist, James Young.

Mike is on the right, James on the left
Mike is actually from Tomball, a suburb of Houston, so he was right at home for this show. Their song, "Small Town Kid" is about growing up here.

Needless to say, they put on a great show as well :)

They sang all of my favorites...

...and were extremely interactive with the crowd.

I even caught a pic they threw to the audience!

I would absolutely love to go see them again!

Here they are playing my favorite song, Guinevere. Enjoy!

The next night, I went to see the Houston Symphony. I've never been to the Symphony before, despite having played the flute for 7 years. This show was a special show as well--it featured Smokey Robinson!

That's right, the Motown legend performed with the Symphony!

Unfortunately, I have no pictures from the concert, but you can read about it here. I will say that Smokey (who turns 73 this month, btw) still has it! He was interactive and reveled the crown with stories about The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and all of his experiences on the road. It was an amazing experience, and I consider myself lucky to have seen such a great performer!

Wish List

Lately, I've been Jonesing to go shopping--shopping for very pretty, yet completely unnecessary things.

Now, if you've read this post, you'll know that I have cut back, and that translates to no frivolous purchases.

What I can do, however, is show all of you some of what I would be buying if I had unlimited resources!

We'll start with pretties for the house.

Back in December, I "liked" Pottery Barn and West Elm on Facebook. One of the awesome things about their page is they allow you to add items from their amazing roomscapes to a wish list, where you can go back and daydream about having those items for yourself. Some of the items I've added to my wish list are (click on the pictures to go to each link) :

This bakers rack. These things are so dang versatile, and they let you show off all your lovelies...

...lovelies like these mercury glass candles...

I've been dying for a comfortable chair to add to my living room. This would be perfectly cozy to read a book or to have as "visitor chair". Plus the pattern is fabulous!

I just adore this console table. I love the contrast between the wood and the metal, and adore the fact that it has a shelf--the more horizontal surfaces, the better!

And this, this beauty is probably my favorite. It's the perfect size and I adore the tufted back! *swoon*

I also popped into Barnes and Noble a couple weekends ago to kill some time. I got sucked in and nearly lost track when I needed to leave once I found the table of all of their fancy candles and soaps. They have dozens of scents,  brands, sizes and looks. Two of my favorites were:

Michael Design Works Lemon Basil candle. This fragrance is clean, light and refreshing. It would be great in a kitchen.

Paddywax Mark Twin Library candle. This is a very distinct, richly scented candle with hints of tobacco and vanilla. It would be perfect for a bedroom.

I would also love to have just about anything you can see in this picture I snapped for my wish list while at Target the other day. You can find this entire line here.

Now for the accessories...

One of my favorite stores to get accessories, especially super trendy accessories, is Forever21. Not only are their goods right on point for any and all trends, but they are also quite reasonably priced, so you don't have to feel guilty if you only wear those day-glo skinnies enough times to count on one hand.

Before we start, please don't judge the number of  items that incorporate anchors...I have a pretty big thing for anchors...

Last, but absolutely and certainly not least, are the shoes.

There are surprisingly few on my list right now. For some reason I'm just not feeling the want for shoes right now (and my mother is probably sending an ambulance to my place as she reads that last line. Yes, I promise I'm feeling OK!)

I love these nautical-striped wedges from Gianni Bini. They would be ah-maz-ing for summer!

I've also been searching for black peep-toe wedges with a reasonable heel, and found some online at Forever21. Did I mention I love that store for accessories?! Not only do they have them in black, but they also come in a tan/mustard color and Kelly green. I think I need all three. Thoughts?

What are some things you would buy if there were no spending limits?

New Things

I told you a few weeks ago about my New Year’s resolutions. One thing I forgot to add to that list is I’m trying to do one new thing a week.

There’s a quote/saying/mantra out there that says you should do one thing a day that scares you. I've seen it all over the place, but specifically on my Lululemon bag. That was kind of my inspiration for this resolution.

I'm not doing anything particularly "scary", but I definitely want to try something new, however small, at least once a week this year.

So far this year, I've:

1. Made Spaghetti Squash

You can read all about that adventure here.

2. Tried Mochi

If you've never heard of mochi, no worries. The first time I ever heard of it was at a fro-yo shop, where it was offered as a topping. Those are mini-marshmallow sized and a bit different than the ones pictured.

Mochi is a Japanese treat made of pressed rice paste and some kind of filling. The flavor I had was Taro (pictured). The best description I can give you is if you think of a marshmallow stuffed with caramel and dusted with a very light coat of powdered sugar, you have an idea of the texture. The flavor is very much specific to itself, I don't really have anything to compare it with. It's not too sweet, but it's sweet enough to know that you're getting a treat.

Overall? Weird, but definitely yummy!

3. Played Kickball

I had never played kickball up until 2 weeks ago. Ever. We didn't have the grade school playground tournaments where I grew up. Our school was completely obsessed with Tetherball. Now that was a great game!

Anywho, I'm playing in the same league I played sand volleyball in, with about half of the same team and a bunch of new people. Man, I love making new friends! So far, our record is the same as it was in volleyball. Last week we went up against the 3-time returning champion team and got demolished! Oh well, we got to see a great team in action and learned a ton of new strategy.

4. Watched Fight Club for the first time

All of my male friends would nearly have a conniption any time I mentioned I had never seen this movie, so this past week, I remedied that.  If you've never seen it, it's pretty good, assuming you can get past a bunch of men punching each other for the "joy" of it. It's definitely a mess-with-your-mind movie, which I love (although I already knew the twist at the end...)

And this week, my new thing will be to go backstage to meet a band!

I won tickets from a radio station here in Houston to go see Eli Young Band at House of Blues this Thursday. On top of that, I won backstage passes to meet the band and entry into a bar-b-q the radio station is throwing for the band and whoever wins these passes.

I've never been backstage at a concert, much less sat down to dinner with a performing artist. I.AM.PUMPED! I'm taking the bestie, and it's going to be a fantastic time!

EYB is playing 2 shows this week at House of Blues here in Houston. If you're interested, you can find info for Thursday's show here or Friday's show here.
